Most people are unaware of the discrepancy that exists between WSIB rehabilitation services and what is offered through private rehabilitation services, in fact, many don’t realize that the two are separate entities entirely. Here is what you need to know.

What is WSIB (Workman Safety Insurance Board) rehabilitation?

WSIB rehabilitation consists of rehabilitation services that are covered by WSIB once you make a claim and it is approved. After jumping through many hoops to prove and/or demonstrate that you are, in fact, injured and that said injury is affecting your ability to work, they will agree to cover the cost of your physical rehab. This coverage is a bare minimum, and in order for service providers to rehabilitate you at the rates WSIB provides, they need to reduce the length of your rehabilitation appointments, and often the services they can offer you. WSIB typically only covers a third of what someone like a physiotherapist would normally charge. As such, while you’ll still receive quality treatment, it might not be the amount you really may need.

What is private rehabilitation?

This refers to rehabilitation services that you access via your own personal insurance, or as an out of pocket expense. Personal health insurance, or motor vehicle insurance policies are usually structured to cover a percentage or up-to a certain dollar amount of rehabilitation coverage. This allows you full access to whatever services you need, resulting in fair and proper billing, which permits your care providers to spend the time with you that you need to recover properly.

Rehabilitation services aren’t covered under public health services, like my doctor?

Not always. Physiotherapy, chiropractic, and optometric services were all deregulated quite a while ago leaving most of the services to fall under the private care umbrella. While deregulating these services made managing the general healthcare of the province more affordable, it also put a lot of practitioners and patients in tough spots financially. Some of these services can be expensive, especially if you require long term care. Sometimes WSIB rehabilitation is the only route a person has available to them, and service providers know that. The major problem is that service providers actually lose money on WSIB patients, which means they need to have a limit on how many WSIB patients they can have on their roster at any given time.

It is important to note, however, that some services fall under employee benefit plans.

This is further compounded by the clinics that are now no longer accepting WSIB rehabilitation patients, simply because they can’t afford to. In these cases, practitioners are left between a rock and a hard place. They are committed to caring for their patients, but in many ways WSIB makes it very difficult to do.

How do we fix this?

The easiest fix for this is for WSIB rehabilitation allotments to increase which will give injured workers more access to more options in terms of facilities, appointment times, and a reduced waitlist. Furthermore, they may even heal faster because their therapists would be able to give them more treatment time, and additional treatments.
